TL;DR

Check the camera-roll setting, photo permission and free storage first. If a story has already disappeared, check whether it is in your Archive.

Posted a story but can't find it in your photos? These checks can help you narrow down the cause.

Note

Menu names change between Instagram versions, and between iPhone and Android. If a label doesn't match exactly, look for the closest one.

The 30-second checklist

  1. Is Save story to camera roll turned on?
  2. Is Instagram allowed to add to your photos?
  3. Does your phone have free space?
  4. Does the story use a music sticker?
  5. Did you post it from this phone?

1. The camera-roll switch is off

Instagram only copies a story to your phone automatically when this switch is on. It's easy to lose after an update or a new phone.

  1. Profile
  2. ☰ Menu
  3. Archiving and downloading
  4. Save story to camera roll

One switch decides whether new stories reach your photos.

The switch only works for stories you post from now on. It doesn't go back and save older ones. For both auto-save switches and a backup that runs outside Instagram, see how to save Instagram stories automatically.

2. Instagram isn't allowed to add photos

If you once tapped Don't Allow on the photo prompt, Instagram can't write to your gallery, even with the switch on.

  • iPhone: Settings → Instagram → Photos → choose Full Access or Add Photos Only.
  • Android: Settings → Apps → Instagram → Permissions → Photos and videos → Allow.

3. Your phone is out of space

When storage is nearly full, saving can fail without any warning. Videos are the first to go. Free up a few gigabytes and post a test story.

4. The story has music on it

Stories with a music sticker are the most common troublemakers. Depending on licensing, the saved copy can come out without the music, or not save the way you expect. We covered this in how to save stories with the music still on.

5. The quick fixes that still work

  • Update Instagram to the latest version.
  • Restart your phone, then post a short test story.
  • Check your gallery's Recents and Instagram albums, not just one.
  • Stories only save to the phone you posted from. Posted from a tablet? Look there.
  • Still stuck? Log out, reinstall the app and turn the switch on again.

Already missing? Check the Archive

Even when the phone copy fails, Instagram usually keeps your own stories in the Archive: Profile → ☰ Menu → Archive. From there you can open a story and save it again. For the bigger picture, see 5 ways to keep your stories after 24 hours.

Quick questions

Does turning the switch on save my old stories?

No. It only applies to stories you post after turning it on. Older ones are in your Archive if Save story to archive was on.

Will anyone know I saved or screenshotted a story?

Saving your own story is private. For other people's stories, we explain what Instagram does and doesn't tell them in does Instagram notify story screenshots?
